I Am

“Who do you say that I am?” —Matthew 16:15

Jesus is gradually revealed throughout Scripture. In Genesis, He is the Word of God, who speaks creation into existence. In Exodus, He is the Deliverer who leads God’s people out of slavery; the Shepherd who guides them through the wilderness. We see a glimpse of Him in the life of David, both as the Hero who defeats the great Enemy and as King. He is the Love of God and neighbor, woven throughout the books of the Law and the Prophets. And in the Gospels, we read an account of Jesus’s earthly life as Immanuel—God with us—the heart of God in human form.

Jesus makes seven “I Am” statements about Himself in the gospel of John:

I am the bread of life.

I am the light of the world.

I am the door of the sheep.

I am the good shepherd.

I am the resurrection and the life.

I am the way, the truth, and the life.

I am the true vine.

He is provider, protector, and guide—leading us toward a life of beauty and wholeness by His side.
