At His Feet
“…few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
- Luke 10:42
I serve best sitting at the feet of Jesus.
Even as I type the sentence, it sounds contradictory. I’m not sure that it translates to anyone else’s life, or that it will always be true for me. But I know that it’s at least true for now.
In Luke 10:38-42, we read about Jesus visiting the home of Mary and Martha, where the two sisters respond to His presence in very different ways. While Martha toils away, we see Mary sitting at the feet of Jesus, her attention focused on Him and His teaching. A place at the foot of a rabbi was reserved for his students. In the culture of the time, it was an unacceptable position for a woman. But it’s as if Mary doesn’t even see the looks of disapproval, either from her sister or from anyone else present. Her eyes are up, focused on the face of her Lord.
I’m no Mary. My tendency is to the opposite, eyes wildly darting from one person to the next, searching for their approval and running myself ragged chasing after it. But when I sit down and raise up my eyes, I see the One. The One who did all and paid all, the One who doesn’t need my help but offers me the privilege of being involved in His work anyway, the One who is Love and fills me to overflowing so that He will pour out into the lives of those around me.
Prayer: Lord, in Your mercy, teach me to keep my eyes up on You, and train me into a ‘sitting at your feet’ posture.
