Prayer

Experiencing Awe and Intimacy with God

Summary

In this book, Keller addresses both the why and how of prayer.  Prayer is an important part of the Christian life.  Although we all struggle with prayer throughout our lives, it is important that we persevere in order to know both God and self.  Our prayers should be a mixture of ‘upward’ praise and thanksgiving, ‘inward’ self-examination and confession, and ‘outward’ supplication and intercession.  We follow the basic format of the Lord’s Prayer, firmly fixing our eyes on God and His Kingdom before moving on to our personal concerns.  Because it is intended as a conversation, prayer should be grounded in Scripture.  We read and meditate on God’s Word, in order to examine our lives in light of what we find there.

“…prayer is rebellion against the evil status quo of the world…”

“When God commands us to glorify Him, He’s saying to enjoy Him…Prayer plunges us into the fullness of who he is, and his love becomes more real than the rejection or disappointment we are experiencing.  Then we can handle our problems, and we can hold our heads up again.”

“If we believed that God was in charge and our actions meant nothing, it would lead to discouraged passivity.  If on the other hand we really believed that our actions changed God’s plan—it would lead to paralyzing fear.  If both are true, however, we have the greatest incentive for diligent effort, and yet we can always sense God’s everlasting arms under us.  In the end, we can’t frustrate God’s good plans for us.”
