Summary

This book is an argument for a sold-out, all-in faith in Jesus Christ.  This kind of faith requires us to surrender to God’s will and consecrate ourselves for the work that He wants to do in and through us.  Batterson urges us to go on offense, pick a holy fight, and march in one step at a time.  Through the stories of biblical characters such as Elijah, Jonathan, and the woman with the alabaster jar, Batterson makes the case that God loves spiritual desperados.  Like them, our lives are best lived for God’s glory and the applause of nail-scarred hands.

“When did we start believing that God wants to send us to safe places to do easy things? That faithfulness is holding the fort? That playing it safe is safe? That there is any greater privilege than sacrifice? That radical is anything but normal? Jesus didn’t die to keep us safe. He died to make us dangerous.”

“Nine times out of ten, failure is resorting to Plan B when Plan A gets too risky, too costly, or too difficult.”

“Elisha could have lived his entire life in the dancing meadow. So can you. You can play it safe instead of stepping out in faith. You can protect your reputation instead of risking it. You can save your money instead of giving it. You can keep plowing your fields instead of following the call of God, but you might very well be forfeiting twenty-eight miracles.”

“If you let fear dictate your decisions, you will live defensively, reactively, cautiously. Living by faith is playing offense with your life. And it’s the difference between holding out on God and going all out for God.”
