Socratic Seminar #1

The Cost of Intimacy

Scripture Reading: John 13:1-17

Opening Question:

What word or phrase stands out to you the most?

Core Question 1:

What does this Scripture teach us about Jesus? What does it teach us about ourselves?

Core Question 2:

What were the costs and benefits of Jesus’s small-scale, intimate approach to discipleship (Be sure to consider both the visible/immediate as well as hidden/delayed).

Core Question 3:

What is the cost of intimacy in our lives?

Concluding Thought:

The Gospel Message is one of intimacy: Knowing that we could never make it back to God on our own, Jesus willingly came to earth to live a perfect life and die a terrible death on our behalf. He knows us, He loves us, and He came for us each personally. This week, consider the cost of that intimacy, both what it cost God to extend it and what it costs you to accept it.
