Core Question
4
It is difficult to see what is happening during this scene as it is depicted in the movie, The Passion of the Christ. An armed mob arrives in the Garden of Gethsemane and chaos ensues. Jesus’s disciples are torn between a desire to stay and defend Him and a stronger desire for self-preservation. It is difficult to tell them apart from the members of the mob, until someone cuts off someone else’s ear. Then we can at least identify Peter.
Suddenly, there is a lull in the action. The violence of the arrest pauses just long enough for Jesus to reattach the ear of the High Priest’s servant. Then Jesus gives Himself up without a fight. But, regardless of His cooperation, He is badly beaten and bloodied by the frenzied mob, long before He ever stands trial before the Sanhedrin.
There He is slapped by one of the religious leaders and then beaten again by the mob.
Later He is flogged to the brink of death by the Roman soldiers.
Having simply reached out to heal the servant, Malchus (John 18:10), Jesus now refrains from calling on the power of His Father in order to heal Himself.
What impact do you think Jesus’s healing of the High Priest’s servant had on the servant, the armed mob, Peter, the rest of the disciples?
