Week #2

Temptation

Scripture Reading: Luke 4:1-13

Opening Question:

What part of this passage stands out most to you?

Core Question 1:

With what three things does Satan tempt Jesus? What is at the core of each temptation?

Core Question 2:

How are these similar to the original temptation of Adam and Eve (Genesis 3:1-7)? How have you faced similar temptations in your life?

Core Question 3:

According to Dallas Willard in Life Without Lack, why is it crucial that we fill our minds with God’s truth?

“When we get up out of bed in the morning, among our first thoughts should be this: Lord, speak to me. I’m listening. I want to hear your voice. This is not because it’s a nice way to start the day, but because the only thing that can keep us straight is being full of God and his Word. If you don’t do something like this, you do not have the option of having a neutral mind. Your thoughts cannot be empty. As the old saying goes, nature abhors a vacuum. If you are not entertaining God’s truth, you will be entertaining Satan’s lies.”

Concluding Question:

As apprentices of Jesus, what can we learn from His response to Satan’s temptation?
