Week #3

Discipleship

Scripture Reading: Luke 5:1-11

Opening Question:

What part of this passage stands out most to you?

Core Question 1:

How do you think Simon and his companions felt when Jesus asked them to “put out a little from shore” (vs.3)? When He asked them to “put out into deep water and let down the nets for a catch” (vs.4)? When He told them “Don’t be afraid, from now on you will fish for people” (vs.10)?

Core Question 2:

When have you experienced a similar invitation to follow Jesus even when you didn’t want to or it didn’t make sense?

Core Question 3:

According to Richard Rohr in Falling Upward, the second half of our life requires a journey into deeper spiritual waters.

“…the task of the first half of life is to create a proper container for one’s life and answer the first essential questions: ‘What makes me significant?’ ‘How can I support myself?’ and “Who will go with me?’  The task of the second half of life is, quite simply, to find the actual contents that this container was meant to hold and deliver…In other words, the container is not an end in itself, but exists for the sake of your deeper and fullest life, which you largely do not know about yourself!  Far too many people just keep doing repair work on the container itself and never ‘throw their nets into the deep.’”

What do you think it might look like for you to “put out into deeper waters” with Jesus in your life right now?

Concluding Question:

What can we learn about discipleship from this interaction between Jesus and His soon-to-be apprentices?
