Fully Human

“While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son.  She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.” (Luke 2:6-7)

Our first glimpse of Jesus reveals God in human form, with His basic needs being cared for by a human mother.  Mary wrapping infant Jesus with cloth and laying Him down to sleep in a feeding trough.  And although it isn’t specifically mentioned in the scripture, Mary would have also been the source of Jesus’s first meal.  The God of the universe making Himself completely dependent on the care of and protection of ordinary human beings.

It’s astounding.  Our God, giving up His position of complete power, where He lived outside of time and space, in a perfect relationship of love with Himself—the Trinity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—to become like us.  Our God willingly taking on the physical limitations of humanity, with its frailty and vulnerability.  Willingly subjecting Himself to the spiritual and emotional brokenness of our fallen world.

Meditation

  • Consider all that God was willing to experience as a human.
